McCain-Graham-Ayotte: President's Sequestration Report Leaves Americans "In the Dark"

Sep 14, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) released the following statement today regarding the Office of Management and Budget Report Pursuant to the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012 - which states that defense sequestration will have a "devastating" impact on defense, be "deeply destructive to national security", and "threaten the safety and security of the American people":

"Unfortunately, at a time when threats to our country are growing, this report represents another example of the failure of President Obama to lead. The report echoes the dire warnings of the President's Secretary of Defense and Joint Chiefs of Staff, and yet the President has failed to lead a bipartisan effort to avert this looming national security disaster.

"This report, which was required by the law President Obama signed, was not only a week late, but it fails to provide details down to the program, project, and activity level. The report claims that more time is needed to provide these necessary details - but that is principally because the Administration has deliberately refused to plan for sequestration for an entire year. This disappointing report provides virtually no new information.

"With sequestration less than four months away, the President's decision to ignore the specific intent of this law leaves Congress, the Department of Defense, defense suppliers, and the American people in the dark.

"We call on the President-as Commander in Chief-to lead an immediate bipartisan effort to agree on an alternative to sequestration and prevent a crisis that Secretary of Defense Panetta has said will ‘inflict severe damage to our national defense for generations.'

"Our nation cannot afford to wait until after the election to begin to develop a sequestration alternative. Congress should not leave town until we have a bipartisan solution."
